Oesophageal Cancer Surgery

Oesophageal (Food Pipe) Cancer Surgery

Careful Staging. Specialist Surgery. Guided Recovery.

Difficulty swallowing that slowly gets worse is the most common sign of food pipe (oesophageal) cancer. When the cancer has not spread, removing the affected part of the food pipe — usually after chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy — offers the best chance of cure.

About Oesophageal Cancer Surgery

Oesophagectomy removes the part of the food pipe that contains the cancer, together with the nearby lymph nodes. The stomach is then shaped into a tube and joined to the remaining food pipe, so that food can again pass from the mouth to the stomach.

Most patients first receive chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy to shrink the tumour. Dr. Waliullah Siddiqui plans the timing of surgery with the oncology team, and prepares each patient with nutrition and breathing exercises so that recovery after this major operation is as smooth as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is food pipe cancer curable?

When oesophageal cancer is found before it has spread to other organs, treatment with chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy followed by surgery offers the best chance of cure. Difficulty swallowing should never be ignored.

What tests are needed?

An endoscopy with biopsy confirms the diagnosis. CT and PET-CT scans show the extent of the cancer. Heart and lung tests and a nutrition assessment check your fitness for surgery.

Can I eat normally after oesophagectomy?

Yes. The stomach is shaped into a new food pipe. Most patients return to eating by mouth in small, frequent meals, with a dietitian's guidance during recovery.

How long is the hospital stay?

Oesophagectomy is a major operation. Most patients stay in hospital for about 10–14 days, including a few days in intensive care.

Will I need chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

Most patients receive chemotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy before surgery. The plan is decided by the oncology team together with your surgeon after staging.
