Gallbladder Stone Diet: What to Eat and What to Avoid

Foods that trigger gallbladder pain, foods that are easier on digestion, and how to eat before and after surgery — in English and Hindi.

Gallbladder Stone Diet: What to Eat and What to Avoid

Diet cannot dissolve gallbladder stones, but the right food choices can reduce painful attacks while you wait for treatment, and help you recover smoothly after surgery.

Foods to avoid with gallbladder stones

  • Deep-fried food — samosa, pakoda, puri, kachori, chips
  • Heavy ghee, butter, cream and full-fat paneer
  • Red meat and rich gravies; processed and fast food
  • Large meals late at night
  • Sweets and bakery items high in fat and sugar

Foods that are easier on your gallbladder

  • Small, frequent meals instead of two or three large ones
  • Roti, daliya, oats, poha and rice in moderate portions
  • Dal, moong, rajma and chana in home-style, low-oil preparations
  • Vegetables and fruits — steamed, boiled or lightly cooked
  • Low-fat curd, buttermilk (chhaas) and toned milk
  • Grilled or boiled fish and chicken in place of fried items
  • Enough water through the day

Should I lose weight quickly?

No. Crash diets and very rapid weight loss can actually trigger new stones and attacks. Aim for steady, gradual weight loss if you are overweight.

Diet before gallbladder surgery

Keep meals light and low in fat in the days before surgery. Your surgical team will tell you when to stop eating and drinking before the operation.

Diet after gallbladder removal

  • First few days: light food — khichdi, daliya, soup, curd rice, fruits
  • Next 2–4 weeks: slowly add normal home food; keep oily and spicy food limited
  • Long term: most people eat normally; a few notice loose stools after fatty meals, which usually settles with time

Diet helps with symptoms but does not treat the stones. If you have repeated pain, read when gallbladder surgery is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I not eat with gallbladder stones?

Avoid deep-fried food, heavy ghee and butter, cream, red meat, fast food and large late-night meals — these commonly trigger gallbladder pain.

Can diet dissolve gallbladder stones?

No. A low-fat diet can reduce attacks, but it does not remove stones. Symptomatic stones are usually treated with laparoscopic surgery.

What can I eat after gallbladder removal?

Start with light food such as khichdi, daliya, soup and curd rice, then slowly return to normal home food over 2–4 weeks.
